2020, 30th april - ongoing, ECUMENE Residence by Eni Derhemi and Giulia Dongilli, Italy.

About:
ECUMENE is a virtual convivium for sensitive souls which was born during spring 2020, as an idea of Eni Derhemi & Giulia Dongilli.

KULA is a symbolic exchange of gifts between the populations of the Trobriand Islands. Travelers sail hundreds of miles by canoe to exchange gifts which consist in necklaces of red shells traded in the northern direction and bracelets of white shells traded in the southern direction. The KULA journey happens in a circle and follows the movement of the clock. Each participant keeps the gift for a short period of time before passing it on to one of his partners from whom he received the opposite gift in exchange. The exchanged objects are filled with magical meanings and possess great power over the sea spirits, according to local mythology and beliefs.

Often, in modern society, we tend to relate giving with hypocrisy. Is this maybe a product of our nature which has become always more closed, egoistic and self centered?

What mostly fascinates us about the KULA ceremonial exchange is that it enlightens the fact that inside the gift itself there’s a part of the giver’s soul; it’s an extension of the individual and like this it creates a net of personal relationships through all the givers. Of course, this is connected on many metaphoric levels with the human’s social nature.

The given objects during the KULA ceremony obtain an unique inner power – a spirit – which is of course transmitted from the person that gives them. They become identifications of the individual and also a strong point of reference to it while the participants enter the process of giving, taking, exchanging and sharing. Giving implies a great dose of freedom. It’s true that when you give something you also wait for something back as well, but there is no rule about it, it’s just a felt, inner obligation that does not have a right way to settle or just one way; you can create your own way.

The Palace Project:
(HD, color, single channel video serial, 2011-2020)

The Palace Project is intermingling stage experiences of the audience, sitting in front of the scene and experiencing dreams created for it by authors, players, scene creator, light technicians etc. and the cliche each of us has about an ancient place, an ancient building like a castle. Castles are places which should have been vanished long time ago because the life style, the believe system, the governmental structure it incorporates, have been disappear centuries ago. Maybe this is why we love to visit castles, because there is so much room for projecting ones own dreams and imaginations of how this ancient times probably would have been, mixed with wishes we have about how our life would look like, if we would have be born long ago.

WINDOW TO THE WORLD: VIDEO
curated by Cameron Kelly, 11th - 31st may 2020 at Chico Art Center, 450 Orange Street, Chico, California, USA

https://chicoartcenter.com/windows-into-the-world-video/

The exhibition presents Joas Nebe´s video works THE DANCE 2 and THE PUDDLE OF DREAM No 1.

This virtual exhibition features personal perspectives during this time of the COVID-19 pandemic; literal view from one's window, interpretive responses of emotional life, or aspirational views were welcome.

Each image is accompanied by a short reflective statement about the creator's experience.

Some of the most inspiring artwork has come from the darkest of times. Pablo Picasso painted Guernica at his home in Paris in response to the bombing of Guernica, a Basque Country town in northern Spain, by Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy. A tour of the painting raised funds for Spanish war relief. Freda Kahlo transformed her body casts into mystical paintings during her many bed bound, post-op recovery periods. When Henri Matisse could no longer stand, he drew from his bed using an improvised staff. Ruth Asawa found her calling as an artist at age 16, in an internment camp. Early American Whalers passed their idle time by carving images into leftover whale teeth and bones. More recently, over the past two weeks, Kremena Todorova and Kurt Gohde of Kentucky, have been photographing community members on their porches as a community portrait project. How are you using your time? We want to see. Use your visual voice.

THE DANCE 2:

Dance 2 footage has been shot on a open air Berlin dancefloor back in 2011. The footage has been remastered into more or less abstract patterns, which turn again and again over into recognizable parts of dancers.

Dance is a perfect example for the human basic need for socialising, which is interrupted by the drive to distance from each other. Like in human relations this two drives are basic. Social distancing interrupts this up and down of approaching and distancing and so the dance becomes a souvenir of past times.

https://vimeo.com/406836613

THE PUDDLE OF DREAM No 1:

The footage used in this video has been shot at a hurricane evacuation route in Southern Florida. The beauty of royal palms along the street masks the underlying horror of the emergency situation which means leaving your home and your belongings behind in order to rescue one´s own life. The quarantine and the confinement, we are experiencing allver the world, is similar and at the same time the opposite of an escape from a place endangered by a hurricane, because we are force to stay in one place in order to save our lives and the lives of other people instead of fleeing.

TELEPHONE
curated by Nathan Langston / Satellite Collective

ABOUT TELEPONE:

TELEPHONE works just like the children’s game of the same name. Also called Operator, Grapevine, Phonebook, Ear-To-Ear, TELEPHONE is simple. One person comes up with a message and whispers it to another person. That person whispers to the next person. As the whispered message travels through the sequence of players, the message changes, it evolves, it surprises.

In our game of TELEPHONE, we whispered the message from art form to art form. So the message could become poetry, then a painting, then music, then film, and so on. Each artist was only aware of the work of art that directly preceded her or his own. Each artist received a work and was told to translate the message into the language of his or her own art form.

The other twist was that when an artist sent back their interpretive work, we then “whispered” it to two or three other artists. Instead of progressing in a single, straight line, our game of TELEPHONE branched out exponentially like a family tree. This interactive, online exhibition presents 315 original and interconnected works in 18 different art forms, created specifically for this experiment by artists from 159 cities in 42 countries. And it all originated with a single message.

INTRODUCTION:

For the first time in history the whole world talking about the same thing. COVID-19 has isolated us, robbed us of our social lives, our jobs, our days. But it has also united us - in our search to understand it.

We asked artists to respond to a series of questions about the COVID-19; questions that sought to provoke a positive response, and look to uncover a possible positive future when we have recovered from its effects.

The response from painters, sculptors, photographers, writers, dancers, performers, actors and film-makers via 25 countries and four continents. Their work is diverse and contradictory, their opinions often surprised but always engaged and enlightened.

About The Show:

The result is a wide selection of art, entirely unconnected except through a desire to find a positive light. The work has been curated into galleries named for the four main elements of the air we breathe and echoes the commonalties in interpretation: Hope for change, Reflection on the self, Being in the moment, and a Search for unity.

As with any attempt to categorise art, the works could easily be in more than one gallery. But separation allows us to look at the work through a particular lens. Many of the works were created as a direct response to COVID-19, some existing works revised with the virus in mind, and others are older works reimagined. But all of them give us a new sense of how to understand this uncertain time.

Ponds and puddles are ephemeral places, just right to nurture dreams or visions. Ponds and puddles the more they disappear, the more they gain acknowledgement by artists, because if something is disappearing soon it will offer a broad variety of interpretations.

It was born with the purpose of promoting video creation as a social cultural wealth and to give visibility to artists who work in this medium. In this second edition we want to bring together an ample array of video pieces and offer a sample of the most interesting proposals that are taking place in the international creative scene which we understand offer a thematic, conceptual or poetic discourse that reflects the complexity and peculiarity of our time. We want to accommodate all kinds of technical and aesthetic proposals. We want to offer plurality and variety within the standards of artistic quality.

Exhibition BIRDS curated by Alison Williams at Hyperflexion Contemporary Art, Port Elisabeth, Nelson Mandela Bay, South Afrika opening soon.

The exhibition includes the artist´s work The LANDMARK PROJECT: VOGELHAUS.

The LANDMARK Project is determined by some general issues, which are an endeavour for every generation in developed countries. Even in the other parts of the world the contradictions between the settlers and the immigrants, the people without a home are one of the main issues. But the Landmark Project focusses on what we do to nature in urban surrounding.
Buildings, even high buildings can be a sanctuary to birds, if their maximum hight is limited. Otherwise they turn into a desert-like environment for the most life on earth. Nevertheless in smaller cities some races of birds come back every year to a city, e.g. Berlin, to multiply and give birth to their kit birds. Even if a metropole is growing like Berlin the birds return because in the case of Berlin there is a lot of free space between the 10-12 floor buildings, which allows birds to breed their breed.

Manners of Speaking | E korero ana nga whakatauki
21 Feb – 26 March 2020
Northtec, Geoff Wilson Gallery, Whangarei, New Zealand

When we speak of the world in metaphor it not only is more engaging but is a reminder that whatever we say is a translation of the worlds around us.

The show is about proverbs and sayings (whakatauki), curated by Sonja van Kerkhoff with 3rd year NorthTec year students.

The artist is participating with his ROOM PROEJECT.

Rooms are essential sources for the home-coming feeling everybody develops during life. Our private rooms are filled up with psychological projects, unfilled wishes, hopes and dreams. The Room Project refers to this part of our lives and overacts it by presenting virtual places of types of human beings determined by professions, believes and passions. It is because our profession as well as our believes prearrange our personal affections in a certain way that the French call “deformation professionelle”.

The Room Project is built up of several video works, mostly one channel. Each work is regarding a profession, a special kind of room (e.g. a stage, a show case, a castles room etc.), intermingled with linguistic meaning of the profession, the room and language itself.

The chosen proverb is:

You Cannot Step Into the Same River Twice
Heraclitus (c. 535 – c. 475 BC, Greece)

The video work has been chosen to illustrate the proverb.

Are you in the mood for something just a little different? Something to stretch your mind in a way that you may not have stretched it before? Well, come take a look at the work of Joas Nebe, a vibrant artist from Germany! Watch his video below and read about the thoughts behind it.

INTRO: A CLOCKWORK TOY

Reality is gone. Only shivers of reality survive. Worst then modern times, e.g. collages of DADA artists. Shivers are so many times broken that they cannot be put together again in order to re-construct reality or an adequate image of reality.

That means, reality is lost, out of reach forever. Mental landscapes and theoretical assumption, ideologies take over uncontrolled forever.

ARTIST ́s STATEMENT:

Gaming into Mindfulness
Interview with Joas Nebe by Rebecca Schoensee (excerpt)
“It’s a never-ending game of disintegration. I challenge the viewer
by not living up to his or her expectations. I am denying the
satisfaction of solving the riddle, hidden within the depth of my
artwork.” By turning his filmic cabinet of curiosity into an
intriguing jigsaw puzzle of hybrid geometric patterns, Joas Nebe
teases the viewer into accessing his game. He believes: “Riddle
games of this kind spark creativity and pass on the role of the
artist to the viewer.”

Taking the Reason Prisoner
To Nebe, “fantasy and creative intelligence are important survival
skills today.” So is chess, an analogy he keeps referring to: “Chess
exemplifies my game with the viewer. In a world of shortening
attention spans, it’s an ideal concentration-practice. One always
has to think a few steps in advance.” By screening the insanity of
our daily chase towards evolutionary bankruptcy, Nebe in a clever
move takes the reason prisoner, only to appoint reason to be the
king of his game of chess. He calls for a close review of the
encyclopedia of our philosophical and cultural foundations. In his
opinion reason has the potential to direct a path away from the
horror vacui he is depicting: “The model of enlightenment has
increasingly been discredited, wrongfully I believe. Today survival
and coexistence are only possible if governed by the faculty of
reason. Labeling and connoting intellectual categories help to bring
new relations into sight and to gain unexpected terms of knowledge.”

The interview essay “Gaming Into Mindfulness” has been published in
Humanize Magazine, issue 11, p. 20-31.

IN MY HOUSE
group exhibition curated by Abigail Miller
starting on 15th february on Instagram

https://www.instagram.com/abigailmillerstudio/

and the curator´s website

https://www.abigailmillerstudio.co.uk/in-my-house

from 16th february 2020

About IN MY HOUSE:

A collaborative curatorial project initiated to explore and challenge the standard exhibition space. 'In My House' is an artist led project, utilising pre-existing, inhabited space and presenting contemporary art within it. The project was designed by Abigail as a way to network and collaborate with artists working in a range of mediums, to reimagine how art can be presented and the politics of space and its influence on art. As a means of convenience but also experimentation, Abigail is using her own house as an exhibition space, documenting and digitizing each show in online space. This project is ongoing and will be archived below.

About LANDMARK: VOGELHOUSE.

We asked the artist to talk more about his latest project that of course, we are always excited not only to how the work looks like, but also to know the “where”, “how”, and “why” it has been created.“Since quite a while I am working on the issue of smallest creature, e.g. insects, butterflies, birds. I have had other issues before, too. One big one was the visual impact that a metropole has on its citizens and visitors. My video work always depends on where I am living. I have been living in the most part of my life in big cities like Hamburg or Berlin. Five years ago, I moved to a small town in Southwest Germany close to the French and Swiss border. Since i am living-so to speak -at the countryside and my interest has shifted to nature and here especially to the smallest creatures, insects and birds. Later it turned out (to be exact: this year) that insects and birds are facing among other species the greatest extinction since the death of dinosaurs hundred thousands of years ago. I read in a newspaper article the unbelievable number of 1500 species of birds only! That was more than enough reason to continue with my issue. There was another drive to readopt the issue of birds on which I had worked before. During the time I was living in Berlin, I used to be awfully fascinated by the different species and the mass of birds that came year after year to Berlin in order to stay the summer between the endless streets surrounded by endless multi storey buildings. Why do birds come to at least for them to such a hostile place like this...?”

MAIN PROGRAM:
“MONGOLIAN CINEMATIC PERSPECTIVES” ULRIKE OTTINGER – JOHANNA D`ARC OF MONGOLIA (1989)

Ulrike Ottinger's epic adventure traces a fantastic encounter between two different worlds.
Seven western women travelers meet aboard the sumptuous, meticulously reconstructed Trans-

Siberian Express, a rolling museum of European culture. Lady Windemere, an elegant
ethnographer played by the incomparable Delphine Seyrig in her last screen role, regales a young companion with Mongol myths and lore while other passengers-a prim tourist (Irm Hermann), a brash Broadway chanteuse and an all-girl klezmer trio-revel in campy dining car cabaret. Suddenly ambushed by a band of Mongol horsewomen, the company is abducted to the plains of Inner Mongolia and embark on a fantastic camel ride across the magnificent countryside. Breathtaking vistas, the lavish costumes of Princess Ulun Iga and her retinue, and the rituals of Mongol life are stunningly rendered by Ottinger's cinematography. Dubbed a female Lawrence of Arabia and just as sweepingly romantic, JOHANNA D'ARC OF MONGOLIA is a grandly entertaining, unforgettable journey.

We will be showing video work of Joas-Sebastian Nebe, Germany.

THE DANCE II

Reality is gone. Only shivers of reality survive. Worst then modern times, e.g. collages of DADA artists. Shivers are so many times broken that they cannot be put together again in order to re-construct reality or an adequate image of reality. That means, reality is lost, out of reach for ever. Mental landscapes and theoretical assumption, ideologies take over uncontrolled forever.

DE-CONSTRUKT
potluck community dinner, film screening and philosophical discussion
curated by Alexandra Banhazl
Red Hook Brooklyn
41 Seabring Street, 3rd floor, Brooklyn, New York, USA

29th september 2019, 20h

The artist´s video The GRAMMAR serial/GANGLAND: VERB will be screened and discussed.

About the video work:

In human evolution language comes into being for making the other understand one´s own position.
Later humans developed tought pattern called ideologies.

Ideologies like the fascist´s or communist´s thought patterns, even some religious sectarianism turns grammar and words into a killing tool by deviding humans into followers and enemys. Crucial to ideologist´s abuse of grammar is turning it´s communication function into a order message system. The ideology dominated communication is a one way communication and language is used to mark the orders which are essential to the progress of revolution, riot and mass killing justified by the thought pattern of the "righteous few". This is the point where ideologist´s abuse of words meets with that of organized crime.

In nowadays language is not only the language of words but the language of images.
There is no difference between words and images, the grammar of language and the grammar of photography or movie.
Words tend to be more abstract. Images seem to tell us that "we get what we buy".
But this is not true. Images are as highly manipulating as words. They follow grammar rules as words do and the rules behind them have a great impact on what we think, we see in them. And "the grammar of images" allows an even deeper impact of behind-the-image thought pattern on the viewer´s mind.

About DE-CONSTRUKT:

WELCOME TO THE REJECTS by coldbench
2nd july - 15th september

is an online exhibition about previously rejected art works. the art works are presented together with rejecting letter.

The exhibition includes the artists video works The Shareholders Room and Life Cycle No. 2.

About Shareholders Room:

SHAREHOLDERS ROOM

Rooms are essential sources for the home-coming feeling everybody developes during life. Our private rooms are filled up with psychological projections, unfilled wishes, hopes and dreams. But there are psychological rooms, too, filled with emotions, expectations, all kind of mental energy, may it be positive or negative.

The Room Project is built up of several video works, mostly one channel. Each work is regarding a profession, a special kind of room (e.g. a stage, a show case, a castles room etc.), intermingled with linguistic meaning of the profession, the room and language itself.

Important aspects of this project is the shifting of perception focus within every single video work of the body of works from the project. Some video works will be named after existing rooms, e.g. in private homes, castles etc.. Other video works will have the title and play with the idea and the connotation of a word, e.g. glass case, Mountainrange, and bring together the linguistic meaning which is important for communication with some associations rooted in the mental and psychological status of a person.

The outcome will be a "big house" consisting of at least 10-20 rooms, each room dedicated to special emotions, professions, or linguistic meanings.

film sample:
https://vimeo.com/205685376

About Life Cycle No. 2:

LIFE CYCLE No. 2

"Life Cycle No. 2" is a part of a serie consisting of three multi channel video installations, where the artists wants to transmit an idea about evolution. A kind of evolution as a continuous genetic adaption of organisms and species but in a process of mutation. The artist is presenting a disturbed evolution, where the end has nothing to do with the beginning.

One of the most important topic of Joas Nebe is the human being, his communication and his interaction with the world around him, and how the humans are altering that one.

He always says from the beginning of his career as an artist, he was fascinated by art works with a hidden message. And that is what he is doing through his art: in his pieces we will rarely find a human figure although is his main subject in his art work.

Joas Nebe will never tell you directly through his art what he wants to tell you. He will challenge you to reflect. At the same time he will propose a topic that involve everyone, because he is doubting everything that is too much accepted by the majority. He wants to bring the spectator to another level, above the right or the bad thinking. Joas Nebe will just propose an idea and we as a receiver, are responsible to answer ourselves."

The footage is taken in different US states shown different parts of the country referring to what Hollywood cinema has told us about how to experience the american way of life and the US lifestyle. About The DARK PLACES series:

Dark Places are causing fear and hate by being more then obscure. Dark places are letting us down when we leave them. They are energy vampires, in a way. Dark Places are everywhere.

To most of them urban dwellers are exposed at least after dark has fallen and they are forced to pass a dark place without streetlights. But Dark Places are not reduced to urban spaces. They dominate the rural landscape as well when sunlight has gone. But even they exist at daytime. They are where lonesome walkways offer the full range of depression to the one who is forced to walk on them alone in order to get to his place.

Next to real dark places virtual dark places exist. They are in the stories we read in the newspaper in the morning or we watch them on TV. Virtual dark places are going to be the resident evil in fake news.

THE CHIN UP ! PROJECT

The Chin Up (!) Project is an video art project by artist Joas Nebe (Germany ) and Alison Williams (RSA). Idea and concept by Joas Nebe, co-curators and project manager Alison Williams and Joas Nebe.

Climate Change is connected with the anthropocenic reproach. Some scientists define the Anthropocenic Age of Climate Change at the beginning of industrialisation, others of the first atomic bomb drop-off.

The last IPCC report says among normal impacts inside and outside the earth system anthropogenic impacts are confusing the long-term impact systems of El Nino, Jet-Stream (Northern Athlantic etc.) are human-made.

Why do this?

Nevertheless climate change is issue to public discussion in different medias (e.g. print media, television, youtube, facebook etc.).
Climate Change as a general theme is determined by scientific researches as well as media-mediated content. The medias (TV, print media, social medias) are depending on what other media formats are prefer as their front page issue. In media science it is called “agenda setting”. In order to draw a conclusion, media setting is another factor about receiving informations on Climate Change.

Some parts of agenda setting are determined by global activists like Greta Thunberg. They have charisma, power and influence and they started their own agenda by using unusual behaviour which is shocking the global community in a positive way. Nevertheless they are staging like a redeemer. (Is she a redeemer..?).

Climate change is such a big issue which never could be represented by simple arguments. In order to approach we need something i have already used in my Democracy Scrabble Project, de-constructing the big and abstract issue:

By doing the DSP we used an abstracting tool (eg the Scrabble Word Machine).

So we are using in this project a similar approach:

Like at the DSP

https://www.magazine43.com/post/june-artist-of-the-month

https://thedemocracyscrabbleproject.wordpress.com/

we use two word lists, one containing

ISSUES of CLIMATE CHANGE (see below)

and a second one of

HEADLINES ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE ISSUE.

Each artist will be asked to choose one issue OR one headline and produce a video about.

The project will be presented @ Hyperflexion Contemporary Art, Port Elisabeth, South Africa

The DEMOCRACY SCRABBLE Project

The Democracy Scrabble Project

international video art project

idea + concept: Joas Nebe

curators: Anna Corpas + Joas Nebe

Democracy is a very abstract term to which we got maybe too much accustomed, democracy a political system that – in the best case- helps people to pursuit happiness – as the US constitution takes it.

Democracy and freedom are among the highest goods we have in the Western world and it seems to us that it is time to think about what we think, democracy stands for, or at least about the cloud of meaning that comes with the word “democracy”.

What we did in order to create this project is feeding a scrabble finder with the word “democracy” and taking the output of the machine as our first starting point.

Democracy means e.g. that majority rules. So what is more obvious than looking for the most used words that start with “d”? We searched the web and compiled a second list with these words.

(Both lists are available at the blog on this website.)

The next step was asking video artists from all over the world to pick one word from the “democracy scrabble” list and one word from the “most used d-words” list and produce to each of this words a small film, each film not longer than 4 minutes.

After receiving the films we compiled them to a “democracy scrabble” list- film and to a “most used d-words” list film, which are finally presented to the public.

THE PROVERB PICTURE PROJECT youtu.be/ZedbA-ZChnc

The Proverb Picture Project is developed and curated by Joas Sebastian Nebe. Participating artists are from around the world, e.g.

US, RSA, Poland, Togo, UK.

“Everyone of us, in some determinated moment, we have been involved in some uncomfortable situation because of communication, or rather not-communication. The most of the times is due to standardization and formalization the language.

From here is where the proverbs and pep talks are coming. They are standard texts that generalize specific cases and situations. These can be very useful in certain situations, but not always, because in each case leaves out a hidden information. These situations are repeated in companies to motivate their own employees, as well as are used in advertising itself or on their websites. On the websites of these companies, their own descriptions are as formal as proverbs and pep talk.

This interesting video art work, curated by Joas Nebe collaborating with other artists, shows a reflection over the standardized communication in all aspects and views from different blocks." (Anna Corpas Sanya, art historian)
