ALC VIDEOART FESTIVAL - FESTIVAL INTERNATIONAL DE VIDEOARTE ALICANTE

14th - 16th may 2019
Centro Cultural Las Cogarreras
Calle San Carlos 78, 03013 Alicante, Spain

The artist will be presented as featured artist with his video work THE DARK PLACES PROJECT: NATURAL HISTORY.

About the DARK PLACES PROJECT:

Dark Places are causing fear and hate by being more then obscure. Dark places are letting us down when we leave them. They are energy vampires, in a way. Dark Places are everywhere.

To most of them urban dwellers are exposed at least after dark has fallen and they are forced to pass a dark place without streetlights. But Dark Places are not reduced to urban spaces. They dominate the rural landscape as well when sunlight has gone. But even they exist at daytime. They are where lonesome walkways offer the full range of depression to the one who is forced to walk on them alone in order to get to his place.

Next to real dark places virtual dark places exist. They are in the stories we read in the newspaper in the morning or we watch them on TV. Virtual dark places are going to be the resident evil in fake news.

RESIDENCIES:

2018, 1st - 31st march, SOCIAL MEDIA RESIDENCY
by PERIPHERAL FORMS

During the one month long residency the artist is taking over the social media account of Peripheral´s.

About Peripheral Forms:
"conceived of as a roving platform for digital art, we work to connect artists with audience through websites, social media, pop up exhibitions, stickers, and any/all other platforms. we believe in sprawling piles of art that expand to meet the needs of today’s break-neck paced barrage of aesthetic consumption. peripheral forms was founded in 2015 by jah (justin alexander hager) justice (preferred name)."

The theme of the online residency is the artist´s ROOM PROJECT.

Rooms are essential sources for the home-coming feeling everybody developes during life. Our private rooms are filled up with psychological projections, unfilled wishes, hopes and dreams. But there are psychological rooms, too, filled with emotions, expectations, all kind of mental energy, may it be positive or negative.

Important aspects of this project is the shifting of perception focus within every single video work of the body of works from the project. Some video works will be named after existing rooms, e.g. in private homes, castles etc.. Other video works will have the title and play with the idea and the connotation of a word, e.g. glass case, Mountainrange, and bring together the linguistic meaning which is important for communication with some associations rooted in the mental and psychological status of a person.

The outcome will be a "big house" consisting of at least 10-20 rooms, each room dedicated to special emotions, professions, or linguistic meanings.

2018, 15th january - 15th february, cbAIRO Winter session II, DIGITAL RESIDENCY by COLDBENCH

Through times, cold bench has become an art community for young and emerging artists to be engaged in the making of art. It is a place where artists come together to share and enjoy the work of one another.

The cbAIRO is a lo-fi yet imaginative simulation of an artist in residence program. Like a regular AIR program, cold bench hosts artists at a shared studio but online.

It is a project-focused residency aiming to help artists to commit to their research and/or working progress.

The artist´s project during his cbAIRO is
THE DARK PLACES PROJECT.

Dark Places are causing fear and hate by being more then obscure. Dark places are letting us down when we leave them. They are energy vampires, in a way. Dark Places are everywhere.

Urban dwellers are exposed to most of them, at least after dark has fallen and they are forced to pass a dark place without streetlights e.g.. But Dark Places are not reduced to urban spaces. They dominate the rural landscape as well when sunlight has gone and shades arise. But even they exist at daytime. They are where lonesome walkways offer the full range of depression to the one who is forced to walk on them alone in order to get to his place. And even castles and palaces can be dark places, where bloody history has been written or the past is overwhelming present to the visitor by taking his breath away.

Next to real dark places virtual dark places exist. They are in the stories we read in the newspaper in the morning or we watch them on TV at night. Virtual dark places are going to be the resident evil in fake news and sometimes it seems they grow.

The Dark Places project is a branch of my bigger Room Project where i do research the mental, physical, spacial and architectural aspects of what we consider to be a room.

THE SCENE & HEARD Journal, a journal of artistic reflections, based in Palo Alto, California, will present the artist´s draft serial CARTOONS NEVER TOLD.

CARTOON STORIES NEVER TOLD is a serial of ink drawings

In this serial the artist is working with trivial codes deriving from cartoons merging it with high culture codes used in fine art drawings.

The easy-access cartoon language with it´s speech bubbles containing words, sentences, even symbols charges and challenges the long tradition of drawing in art history with it´s century-old meanings and messages.

About the Scene & Heard Journal:

"The art of humanity in all its various forms, is the most authentic form of an individual’s internal dialogue, a way in which we share ourselves with the external world.
It is this link to the external world that The Scene & Heard Journal (TSHJ) endeavours to deliver in each and every issue."

The Gallery will present the artist´s BATTLESHIP LARGER THEN LIFE video work in it´s annual exhibition curated by Garry Holstein.

Carnival used to be a free playground for everyone embedded in catholic faith. Especially in Southwest Germany, the Alemannia region, people still play during Fasnet the same old games their ancestors played centuries ago. Analyzing this game you will find out that Fasnet is still the time when religious and ideological theories don ́t have any value to anyone- something which is unknown to islamic or communist ́s traditions.

Daily Migrations - curated by 'without appeal'
October 07, 2018

For their presentation of the Arts Territory Exchange archive @artsterritoryexchange, the collective installed and photographed work throughout an industrial space underneath one of the iconic train arches in Hackney, East London. Images from the ATE Views project and documentation from particpant exchanges are juxtaposed with materials and machinery sourced from throughout the world and used in the production of coffee. As a site of transition, stock is constantly flowing in and out of the factory, present only briefly before being sent out again. At this transitional moment for many, a reflection on how fleeting these interactions can be feels fitting.

ANTHROPOCENE: OF OUR OWN MAKING.
HUMAN DESTRUCTION

September 6th - October 7th, 2018

This exhibition will respond to 'the great acceleration' and resulting environmental catastrophes that influence the frequency and intensity of natural disasters. PEAC believe unless we, as a race, change our priorities, we will experience 'the sixth mass extinction' ...the last human asteroid.

Visitors will have the chance to view the exhibition and take part in workshops exploring some of the techniques used to create the work.

Curator Gemma Papineau will present the artist´s ROOM PROJECT as part of the exhibition.

The Room Project is built up of several video works, mostly one channel. Each work is regarding a profession, a special kind of room (e.g. a stage, a show case, a castles room etc.), intermingled with linguistic meaning of the profession, the room and language itself.

The DEMOCRACY SCRABBLE Project

The Democracy Scrabble Project

international video art project

idea + concept: Joas Nebe

curators: Anna Corpas + Joas Nebe

Democracy is a very abstract term to which we got maybe too much accustomed, democracy a political system that – in the best case- helps people to pursuit happiness – as the US constitution takes it.

Democracy and freedom are among the highest goods we have in the Western world and it seems to us that it is time to think about what we think, democracy stands for, or at least about the cloud of meaning that comes with the word “democracy”.

What we did in order to create this project is feeding a scrabble finder with the word “democracy” and taking the output of the machine as our first starting point.

Democracy means e.g. that majority rules. So what is more obvious than looking for the most used words that start with “d”? We searched the web and compiled a second list with these words.

(Both lists are available at the blog on this website.)

The next step was asking video artists from all over the world to pick one word from the “democracy scrabble” list and one word from the “most used d-words” list and produce to each of this words a small film, each film not longer than 4 minutes.

After receiving the films we compiled them to a “democracy scrabble” list- film and to a “most used d-words” list film, which are finally presented to the public.

World premiere @ (.BOX) video project space, Milan, Italy,

THE DEMOCRACY SCRABBLE PROJECT
international video art project idea + concept: Joas Nebe curators: Anna Corpas

Democracy is a very abstract term to which we got maybe too much accustomed, democracy a political system that – in the best case- helps people to pursuit happiness as the US constitution takes it.

Democracy and freedom are among the highest goods we have in the Western world and it seems to us that it is time to think about what we think, democracy stands for or at least about the cloud of meaning that comes with the word “democracy”.

What we did in order to create this project is feeding a scrabble finder with the word “democracy” and taking the output of that machine as our first starting point.
Democracy means e.g. that a majority rules. So what is more obvious that looking for the most used words that start with “d”? We searched the web and compiled a second list with these words.
(Both lists are available at the blog on this website.)

The next step was asking video artists from all over the world to pick one word from the “democracy scrabble” list and one word from the “most used d- words” list and produce to each of this words a small film, each film not longer than 4 minutes.

After receiving the films we compiled them to a “democracy scrabble” list- film and to a “most used d-words” list film, which a finally presented to the public.

THE PROVERB PICTURE PROJECT youtu.be/ZedbA-ZChnc

The Proverb Picture Project is developed and curated by Joas Sebastian Nebe. Participating artists are from around the world, e.g.

US, RSA, Poland, Togo, UK.

“Everyone of us, in some determinated moment, we have been involved in some uncomfortable situation because of communication, or rather not-communication. The most of the times is due to standardization and formalization the language.

From here is where the proverbs and pep talks are coming. They are standard texts that generalize specific cases and situations. These can be very useful in certain situations, but not always, because in each case leaves out a hidden information. These situations are repeated in companies to motivate their own employees, as well as are used in advertising itself or on their websites. On the websites of these companies, their own descriptions are as formal as proverbs and pep talk.

This interesting video art work, curated by Joas Nebe collaborating with other artists, shows a reflection over the standardized communication in all aspects and views from different blocks." (Anna Corpas Sanya, art historian)
